Malaysian Computational

Linguistics Olympiad (MyCLO)

Malaysian Computational Linguistics Olympiad (MyCLO) is an annual national contest in the subject of computational linguistics. MyCLO started its first competition in the year of 2018. Computational Linguistic is a relatively new field in Malaysia, thus, the effort to introduce Malaysian Computational Linguistics Olympiad to the mass.

MyCLO is a platform to choose the best 4 to 8 students to represent Malaysia in the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL). MyCLO winners will stand a chance to represent Malaysia in the following year's IOL that will be hosted by different countries.

International Olympiad of Linguistics (IOL) is an annual international championship for linguistics for pre-university students. The IOL has its roots in linguistic competitions that was held in Soviet Union since the 1960s. The IOL was started in 2003, with the first edition being held in Bulgaria. As of 2019, there are 43 countries that are represented in the IOL. IOL is a part of the International Science Olympiads. IOL 2020 will take place in Ventspils, Latvia.

To join the competition, participants would not require any prior knowledge of linguistics and neither do they need the ability to speak multiple languages. With just the ability to think logically as well as having patience, participants are more than equipped to join the competition. The problems of MyCLO are in the form of linguistic puzzles which tests students’ ability to apply deductive and logical reasoning, and does not depend on the ability or knowledge in any language.

The following is a sample of the type of questions that appear in MyCLO. Please think about the problem first, before looking at the solution here. For further exercises, you can see sample papers from past IOL.
